New Mill Male Voice Choir: Proud to Be Part of Our Community
New Mill Male Voice Choir has been singing in the Holme Valley since 1991, and we’re proud to call New Mill our home. We rehearse weekly at New Mill Club—right in the heart of the village—keeping the tradition of local male voice singing alive and thriving.
Our connection with the community goes well beyond our concert programme. We’re regular performers at local festivals, including last year’s Holmfirth Arts Festival and the Holmfirth Festival of Folk, where we led a lively sing-along of local favourites like Pratty Flowers (the Holmfirth Anthem).
We were also delighted to sing at Bower Roebuck’s heritage open day, celebrating 125 years of the last working woollen mill in New Mill—the same mill that weaves the cloth for our distinctive green jackets.
At Christmas, you’ll find many of us joining in the local pub carolling tradition—an Advent fixture around Sheffield and neighbouring parts of West Yorkshire, with its own versions of well-known carols.
In a newer tradition, some of our members have introduced Parang music from the Caribbean island of Carriacou, which has strong links to Huddersfield. Our Caribbean-themed evenings in New Mill Club bring our communities and traditions together. And Cynthia and Hyacinth’s jerk chicken is to die for!
Many of our members are active in the wider community too, supporting events and activities not just in New Mill, but in the neighbouring towns and villages where our singers live.

A new initiative for summer 2025 is the folk night at the Rock Inn in neighbouring Brockholes. Hosted by Charlie, everyone is welcome to come along on the last Thursday of every month commencing at 7:00 pm. Charlie prefers sea shanties but any item delivered with enthusiasm and commitment is much appreciated by singers and locals alike.
For us, it’s not just about music—it’s about connection, community, and celebrating the place we’re proud to call home.
