New Mill Male Voice Choir was formed in November
1991. A chance meeting between a group of local singers and a retired opera
singer led to an introductory rehearsal and sing at a local school. The evening
proved to be so successful that regular rehearsals were arranged, with singer
numbers swiftly increasing.
In 1993 the choir formed part of the World Choir (some 8,500 voices) at Cardiff
Arms Park under the baton of Owain Arwel Hughes. A truly memorable event for a
young choir.
By the mid nineties choir numbers exceeded fifty. The International Pianist John
Briggs invited the choir to appear on the video 'The Power and the Glory' and
he produced the choir's first recording, Mills Alive 1
In 1997 and 2003, the choir sang at The Royal Albert Hall in the "Yorkshire
Festival of Music" concert and in 1999 it shared the Huddersfield Town Hall
stage with Black Dyke Band.
In 2000 it appeared with Brighouse and Rastrick Band prior to the choir's tour
of Italy where its performance venues included Venice and Riva. The CD Mills Alive 2
was released in November of that year followed by Decade of Song, the choir's video, released in 2001.
In 2002 the choir travelled to the Czech Republic to perform three concerts -
Prague, Karlovy Vary and Cesky Krumlov and in 2004 a tour of Catalonia provided
the choir with further international experiences.
The internationally renowned singers of Cantorion Colin Jones, the Welsh 'Choir
of Choirs', have become close friends with New Mill and shared concerts in
Huddersfield (2) and Wrexham which were performed to capacity audiences.
In 2003 the choir performed in front of 2,000 Inner Wheel delegates at their
national conference at the Royal Opera House, Blackpool. A successful rotary
conference concert at The Spa Theatre in Scarborough immediately followed by a
full house concert at Helmsley Arts Centre ended another exciting year in 2004.
